COVID-19 Information for Tenants and Residents

St Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre and St. Paul’s Terrace Seniors Residence provide accommodation and a safe environment for seniors who are capable of living independently in private self-contained apartments.

Normally, our tenants and residents are free to come and go, move around the building, participate in programs, or take meals in our restaurant. However, given the unusual circumstances around COVID-19, we continue to ask everyone to heed the advice of Public Health Canada and Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams, and stay at home. Public health officials advise individuals who are 70 years of age or older to self-isolate and only leave home for essentials.

This means seniors should stay inside their apartments as much as possible.

This is an important time for each of us – staff, seniors and their families – to do our part to ensure the safety of our community. We have a shared responsibility to follow the guidance of public health officials to keep one another safe and well. We are expected to maintain physical distancing – which includes inside our building.

We acknowledge and appreciate the measures people have already taken in order to self-isolate and practise physical distancing within our buildings. We ask for their ongoing support and commitment to these measures. We are all in this together and the actions we take now are important for everyone.

The health and safety of seniors remains our top priority.

In accordance with guidance from public health, below is a list of measures that SPLC has put in place.

Building restrictions

Currently, there is limited access to both the Centre and Terrace buildings. All entrances except for the main entrance of each building is closed. This is to help SPLC employees monitor and screen people who enter. Only essential service providers are allowed to enter and are required to screen for symptoms and also wear a mask. Read more about the current building restrictions.

Disinfection

Our cleaning staff have increased the frequency of disinfection of surfaces in common areas in the building. We are regularly disinfecting common surfaces, like door handles, elevator buttons, and washrooms.

Education and resources

Ensuring our tenants and residents have access to accurate and evidence-based information is a priority. SPLC staff are providing self-isolation information packages to each person who returns from travel. Signs have been posted around the building to remind everyone of the symptoms to watch for and the requirement under the Quarantine Act to self-isolate when returning from travel.

Changes at our restaurant

The Terrace Restaurant continues to be open six days per week for lunch and dinner and one day every other week for breakfast. In order to help ensure seniors can safely practise physical distancing, starting April 27, 2020, all meals will be delivered to residents and tenants. The delivery fee is waived during this pandemic period.

  • Yes. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 or minimize the risk of vulnerable populations getting COVID-19, all Canadians are being asked to stay home as much as possible and practise physical distancing.  The Ministry of Health strongly recommends that individuals over 70 years of age self-isolate.  Self-isolation means going home and staying home, according to Public Health Canada.

  • Following the guidance of Canadian public health officials, self-quarantine upon return from travel is mandatory for 14 days. Quarantine is also required if a person has had close contact with someone who has or is presumed to have COVID-19, or if a person is feeling any symptoms of COVID-19, regardless of how mild the symptoms are.

Public Health Canada describes quarantine as:

    • Staying at home and monitoring yourself for symptoms, even if mild
    • Avoiding contact with others to help prevent transmission of the virus at the earliest stage of illness
    • Practising physical (social) distancing in your home and community

All tenants, residents and staff have already been informed of the need to self-quarantine as needed. We have provided information packages to those who we know have recently returned from travelling.

  • When people do leave their apartments, public health officials advise you to maintain physical distance of at least two metres (6 feet). Inside our building, this means that people should not share an elevator with anyone. In the Terrace Restaurant, when picking up take-away meals, people are expected to follow markings on the ground to indicate appropriate physical distancing if there is a lineup.

  • Canadians are being asked to stay home as much as possible, but grocery stores and pharmacies remain open as essential services. However, to avoid having to go out for these essentials, many stores are offering delivery services.

Where possible, we ask that tenants and residents seek delivery services from retailers, call SPLC for support services, or ask for help from friends and family with essential errands. We have shared with tenants and residents a list of grocery stores that are currently available to deliver along with contact information. Many pharmacies are also offering delivery services. SPLC is also providing help with grocery shopping.

SPLC has two new programs. Our expanded Meals on Wheels and the new SPLC Grocery Shopping and Medication Delivery Services program are designed to help seniors stay safe and well – and have access to fresh, healthy food.

If tenants and residents have difficulty obtaining essential services / items or need additional support, please call 416-493-3333.

  • Public Health Canada recognizes the importance of Canadians being able to exercise and advises that if a person is not symptomatic or in quarantine, that walking outside is permitted, provided physical distance between people is maintained.

  • Restrictions to entering the building help limit visitors to only those who are providing essential services, enable us to ensure visitors are screened, and provide greater security. The main entrance is open and anyone coming in (service providers, staff, or tenants/residents) is required to fill out a form that screens for symptoms and travel history. A self-screener form is prominently available at the entrance for all visitors to complete before buzzing the person they are visiting. The self-screener document is reviewed daily by staff and necessary follow-ups are done as needed. Tenants and residents should not allow a visitor in who has symptoms or has travelled within 14 days.

Effective 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, Entrance C will require fob access 24 hours.

  • Tenants and residents will have noticed that there are fewer SPLC staff present at the Centre. That’s because many of our staff are also following public health direction to work from home where possible. Everyone coming into the building is required to fill out a screening form.

  • SPLC understands that during this exceptional time people need flexibility to adapt their normal routines to very difficult circumstances. To support this and enable people to address other unexpected needs, we are reducing the monthly amount by $100 for April and May. If individuals wish to use more than $400, they will continue to have this flexibility.

  • Currently, there is one breakfast offered per week. We will continue to monitor whether there is an increased demand and need for more frequent breakfast meals to be offered.
